1. ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to assess different structures in the body. During the procedure, an ultrasound transducer that produces these sound waves in placed on the skin. The sound waves bounce off of internal tissues or organs and an image is created by the ultrasound machine.

EXAMINATIONS & PREPARATION

ABDOMINAL ULTRASOUND
You must have NOTHING to eat or drink after midnight the night before your appointment.
For afternoon appointments, you are allowed to eat a light breakfast (dry toast, black tea or coffee (no milk or cream). You must have nothing to eat 6 hours before your appointment. Absolutely no meat or dairy products.

PELVIC AND/OR TRANSVAGINAL ULTRASOUND
About 90 minutes before your appointment, go to the washroom and empty your bladder.
You must FINISH drinking 32oz. (1 liter) of any clear fluids at least 60 minutes before your appointment.
Do not go to the washroom. You must have a full bladder for this test.
You may eat as usual.

OBSTETRICAL (PREGNANCY) ULTRASOUND (INCLUDES THE IPS)
About 90 minutes before your appointment, go to the washroom and empty your bladder.
You must FINISH drinking 32oz. (1 liter) of any clear fluids at least 60 minutes before your appointment.
Do not go to the washroom. You must have a full bladder for this test.
If you are in the later stages of pregnancy (22 weeks onwards), you must FINISH drinking 16oz. (500 mL) of any clear fluids at least 60 minutes before your appointment.

HYSTEROSONOGRAM
This test can only be booked during day 5-10 of your menstrual cycle.
This test is used to diagnose abnormalities of the uterus.
It involves the placement of a speculum into the vagina through which a catheter is positioned in the uterus. A saline solution is injected into the uterine cavity while a transvaginal ultrasound is being performed.
This test plays a vital role in an infertility workup.
This is a 2-day test: DAY 1 – Please follow the instructions for a PELVIC ultrasound.  DAY 2 – Take 1 or 2 Advils one hour prior to your appointment. You will be required to wait in the office 15 minutes after the procedure has been finished.

PROSTATE/TRANSRECTAL ULTRASOUND
You must use one (1) DULCOLAX SUPPOSITORY 2 hours before your appointment. This is an over-the-counter medication that is available at most pharmacies. It is inserted rectally. This medication should cause you to have a bowel movement, usually within 15-30 minutes. You do not need a laxative.
About 90 minutes before your appointment, go to the washroom and empty your bladder. THE SUPPOSITORY IS ONLY NECESSARY WHEN A TRANSRECTAL ULTRASOUND IS REQUESTED.
You must FINISH drinking 32oz. (1 liter) of any clear fluids at least 60 minutes before your appointment.
Do not go to the washroom. You must have a full bladder for this test.
You may eat as usual.

ANORECTAL ULTRASOUND
You must use one (1) DULCOLAX SUPPOSITORY 2 hours before your appointment. This is an over-the-counter medication that is available at most pharmacies. It is inserted rectally. This medication should cause you to have a bowel movement, usually within 15-30 minutes. You do not need a laxative.

VASCULAR (DOPPLER) ULTRASOUND
This ultrasound is used to examine blood flow in arteries and veins.
This includes Carotid Doppler, Arterial Doppler of the Extremities (Arms and Legs) and Venous Doppler of the Extremities (Arms and Legs).
No preparation is required for these examinations.

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY (ECHO)
This is an ultrasound of your heart. The walls, valves of the heart and blood flow are examined.
No preparation is required for this examination.

ALL OTHER ULTRASOUNDS
Thyroid/Neck, Breast, Scrotal, Musculoskeletal, Lumps, Hernia
No preparation is required for these examinations.

3. X-RAY

Xray is one of the most common diagnostic tests. It is a quick, easy and painless test.

GENERAL XRAY
No preparation is required for these tests.
Patients are taken on a first come first served basis – wait times and procedure times will vary.
Please inform the technologist if you are or think you may be pregnant. You should not have an xray during the last 2 weeks of their menstrual period.

UPPER GI
An appointment is required.
You must have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before your appointment.
Water, gum or candy are NOT allowed.
Please inform the receptionist if you are diabetic when booking the appointment.
If you have anything in your stomach, the appointment will be rebooked.

4. BONE MINERAL DENSITY (BMD)

BMD is an xray used to assess the density in your bones. It is used to diagnose osteoporosis and also to evaluate how the treatment of osteoporosis is progressing.

No preparation is required for this test.
No appointment is necessary. Patients are taken on a first come first served basis – wait times will vary. The procedure takes about 15 minutes.
Please wear comfortable clothing with no zippers or fasteners (eg. Jogging suit)

5. MAMMOGRAPHY

A mammogram is an xray used to look at breast tissue. It is a diagnostic test used to detect early cancers or diagnose breast disease in patients with symptoms (eg. lump, pain, nipple discharge).

If you are 50 years of age and older and have no breast implants please call (905)479-3945 for an appointment. You do not need a requisition from your doctor.

An appointment is required. You must mention if you have implants.
You must NOT wear any powders, deodorant, lotion or perfume on the day of the test.
If you have not had a mammogram at one of our locations before, you must bring all previous films from other locations on the day of your appointment for comparison.
